We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

Strangely, happiness does not even come from getting something you didn't have. However, happiness does come from "pursuing" something you don't have.

Yeah, as they say, happiness is a journey and not a destination!
I guess, what this quote is suggesting is that in this journey to "pursue" what you don't have, we often tend to forget what we have (which could be the fruit of your past pursuit)... Rather, if we take some time to appreciate what we have then we could be happier!!
This is my interpretation, and honestly, whenever I think about defining happiness it always opens up many possibilities.. Besides, every person has different notion oh his/her happiness.. so, not sure how can one sum it up.....

working very hard on something you are passionate about is a crucial form of happiness

Agree, that's definitely true!!
But to realize that it requires incredible amount of determination and also strength to accept the outcome of the hard work you do, right?
